Winged Foot and the Irish Connection

As Winged Foot gets ready to host the US Open later this week, we get ready to witness an endurance test like no other. Four of the five US Opens held at Winged Foot thus far have been won with scores over par, with the 1974 Open labeled the Massacre of Winged Foot after Hale Irwin triumphed with a score of seven over par.

The Foot has undergone a four-year refurbishment under the watchful eye of Gil Hanse with a brief to restore the original parameters conceived by legendary architect AW Tillinghast.

The venue, which derives its name from the symbol of the New York Athletic Club, was the scene of JB Carr’s second of his record ten Walker Cup appearances in 1949, which was also his first-ever visit to the US. It was also a career changer for Padraig Harrington in 2006 when he finished with three consecutive bogeys, when three pars would have given him victory.

Winged Foot and the Irish (Carr Golf)

Winged Foot is one of the fourteen Irish and US courses to be part of the Carr Mara trophy, a bi-annual tournament hosted in honor of JB Carr and Wellington Mara who was a prominent member and owner of the NY Giants, hence the Mara and Carr families have become great friends.

The owners of both Waterville Golf Links and Hogs Head Golf Club are also members of the Foot, with the latter, Bryan Marsal, being tournament Chairman this week. Narin & Portnoo is also owned by Winged Foot member Larry Foley, who recently retained Gil Hanse to remodel the spectacular Donegal Links.

Many Winged Foot members take the annual pilgrimage to Ireland and Scotland each year to revel on our Links and devour our Guinness. Many have become friends for life. Names like Burns, Cullinane, Connolly, Dardani, Devaney, Dowling, Elia, Esteve, Foley, Joyce, Kavanagh, Kenny, Leahy, Mara, Meriweather, Mulcahy, O’Callaghan, O’Hara, O’Reilly, O’Malley, Scanlon, Trimble, Virtue and Weil (sorry if we missed some pals) make the annual pilgrimage.

The Squirrels – some of whom are Winged Foot members and long-standing clients and friends of Carr Golf, have been traveling to Ireland since 2014.  Pictured above in 2018 at Donegal Golf Club (Murvagh), 2020 would have marked the group’s 7th annual trip to the Emerald Isle.

Good luck to Colin Burns, Mike Gilmore, and the team at WFGC. The Irish have made many great friends at Winged Foot over the years and have enjoyed many great games on both sides of the Atlantic. We wish our friends a historic week celebrating one of the greatest tests in golf, for the world class field on one of the greatest venues in golf.
