Five-Star Romance Retreat To Spoil Your Loved One
To celebrate Valentine’s Day (and beyond), we’ve put together a unique five-star romantic retreat sure to enchant discerning travelers. An ideal gift for Valentine’s Day, anniversaries, birthdays or simply to show your loved one just how much they mean to you, this week-long getaway features an extraordinary itinerary complemented with five-star accommodations and delectable dining.
Day One: Arrive at the Shannon Airport after a relaxing flight. You’ll be greeted by a Carr Golf representative for transportation to Ashford Castle. The site of Rory McIlroy’s lavish wedding last spring, this remarkable 800-year-old castle is a former home of the Guinness family.
Ashford Castle earned the World Spa Award for Ireland’s Best Hotel Spa in both 2016 and 2017. Indulge in a couples’ massage or a luxury treatment of your choice. Set aside time to unwind in the eucalyptus-infused steam room – designed to benefit breathing and improve circulation – or soak in the relaxation pool while appreciating the exquisite features of the seashell chandeliers and Tree of Life Mural.
Afterwards, trek down to the lower ground floor of the castle for dinner at The Dungeon. The dramatic, red-walled room, historic curved stone ceiling and medieval décor set the tone for a traditional Irish meal. It’s a true five-star experience.
Day Two: Begin the day with a history cruise on Lough Corrib, on which Ashford Castle resides. Following the cruise, explore the tranquil property via private horse-and-carriage. You may recognize some of the scenery from the 1951 film The Quiet Man, starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. You can screen the Academy Award-winning film in the cinema at Ashford Castle if so inclined.
Enjoy another on-site dinner, this time at the George V Dining Room. Built in honor of one of Ashford Castle’s most prominent guests, the Prince of Wales (who subsequently became George V of England), its rich, paneled walls and twinkling Waterford Crystal chandeliers bestow a grand sense of occasion. The graceful sounds of the resident pianist further enhance the atmosphere. Appreciate exceptional dishes from the kitchen of acclaimed Chef Philippe Farineau, recently awarded two rosettes by the AA Hospitality Awards, complemented by a fine section of wines from Chief Sommelier Robert Bowe.
Day Three: Combine luxury with function on an exhilarating helicopter ride to Dromoland Castle. Named to Condé Nast Traveler’s “Our Favorite Hotels in the World: Gold List 2018,” Dromoland Castle has hosted political leaders and movie stars from Nelson Mandela to John Travolta. During the magnificent helicopter ride to the castle, you’ll behold the magnificent Cliffs of Moher and the Burren from above. Both locales showcase the specular glory of Mother Nature’s best handiwork in Ireland.
Spend the day partaking in on-site activities including a choice of horseback riding, fishing, spa treatments and falconry. After a full day of pampering and adventure, indulge in a meal at the Earl of Thomond restaurant. The elegant dining experience – smart dress is required – features innovative cuisine served with tradition and a hint of creative flair.
Day Four: Play a round at Lahinch Golf Club, one of the “World’s 100 Greatest Courses” according to Golf Digest. The club celebrated its 125th anniversary last year and is a model for blending the old with the new. While it has undergone multiple renovations to keep up with the times, it has managed to retain its classic charm. Its two most distinctive holes, the par-5 No. 4 and par-3 No. 5 – were designed by the great Old Tom Morris and have stood the test of time.
In the afternoon, unwind by taking advantage of the sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi and / or indoor swimming pool at Dromoland.
Day Five: Depart Dromoland Castle and travel to Ballybunion Golf Club to start your day off with 18 holes at one of the truly special places to play the ancient game. Founded in 1893, the distinguished club celebrates its 125th anniversary this year. Boasting two traditional links layouts – the stately Old Course (established in 1893) and the newer Cashen Course (1984) – both promise to test all aspects of your game while delivering breathtaking vistas of the rugged Atlantic coast.
After your round, journey south to The Europe Hotel & Resort in Killarney. Savor the spectacular views of the lakes of Killarney, mountains and gardens while dining at the Panorama Restaurant. Be sure to save room for dessert as the restaurant is known for its elegant sweet delights.
Day Six: Helicopter to renowned Old Head Golf Links for a morning round. Situated on a peninsula extending into the Atlantic Ocean, Old Head’s dramatic panoramic views are unmatched. This course is especially meaningful to Carr Golf as our late founder, Joe Carr, was part of the design team. The all-star team also included Ron Kirby, former designer at Jack Nicklaus’ Golf Design Services; the late, great Eddie Hackett, former Irish golf professional and course designer; Paddy Merrigan, Australian course architect and agronomist; Liam Higgins, one of Ireland’s best-known golf professionals; and Haulie O’Shea, building contractor extraordinaire.
Continue to enjoy picturesque views on the helicopter ride back to The Europe Hotel. Then, discover Killarney National Park with a romantic horse-and-carriage ride. Head into town for dinner at one of Killarney’s most celebrated restaurants, Gaby’s Seafood Restaurant. Featuring an open fire, wine cellar with extensive wine list and a low-lit dining room, Gaby’s is an ideal place for the final dinner of your romantic retreat. Head Chef and proprietor Gert Maes has over 12 years of competing as part of the Irish team in Culinary Competitions worldwide in cities such as London, Frankfurt, Dallas, Toronto, Dublin, Edinburgh and Valletta. After dinner, settle in for one last night at the Europe Hotel.
Day Seven: Depart from the Shannon Airport fortified with memories to keep your romance thriving until your next getaway to the Emerald Isle.
