The Carr Mara Golf Trust was founded in 2006 and was conceived by Joe McAleese, then honorary secretary of Portmarnock in Dublin, and Len Horan, then President of Winged Foot Golf Club in New York. It was established to celebrate a pair of late sporting greats: Joe Carr, Irish amateur golfing legend and member of the World Golf Hall of Fame – and Wellington Mara, longtime owner of the New York Giants and member of Winged Foot Golf Club.

This competition is held biannually with the host club alternating between Ireland and the US every two years. The inaugural Carr Mara Golf tournament was held in 2007 at Portmarnock Golf Club, Dublin, Ireland. Ten golf clubs participated in the first tournament which was won by the Olympic Golf Club San Francisco, California.

The number of clubs increased to 14 for the 2009 event which was held at the world famous Winged Foot Golf Club (New York) in September. Bel Air Country Club (Los Angeles) emerged victorious after two days of play on the challenging US Open course.
