Review
Clifden in Connemara! The address is in itself a tourist attraction. The Sky Road gives breathtaking views of the sea and Twelve Bens mountains and this exclusive four-star castle hotel just completes the picture. Abbeyglen Castle offers an authentic taste of Ireland and overlooks the sea and the Alpine-like village of Clifden, located in the very heart of Connemara on the West Coast of Ireland.

The castle was built in 1832 by Sir John d'Arcy of Clifden Castle, but it fell into disuse in the days of the famine. The Hughes family purchased it in 1969 and have made extensive changes over the years creating a tastefully decorated hotel with lush sweeping grounds. Abbeyglen and its bedrooms overlook acres of sheltered parkland and gardens with small streams, pheasants and palm trees, drawing the eye to Clifden below. The most recent renovation brought wooden floors and four poster beds to several of the rooms and from your window you can have views of a nearby babbling brook, the valley, the village of Clifden, or even the tennis court and pitch & putt.

Famous for a number of reasons, Marconi first sent transatlantic wireless messages from Clifden, while Alcock and Brown landed their first transatlantic flight here in 1919. And with Kylemore Abbey, Connemara National Park and the Aran Islands close at hand, this is the perfect venue from which to explore the wonderful beauty of Connemara.
