Details
Since it first opened in 1990, The San Roque Golf Club has been one of southern Spain's most exclusive and secluded golf resorts. The centre-piece is a magnificent mansion, formerly the home of the Domecq sherry dynasty and the Club boasts a magnificent 18 hole par 72 championship golf course in addition to a second 18 hole course to be built by Perry Dye and with plans to open in Autumn 2003. Located in Sotogrande, between Jerez and Marbella, on the western limits of the Costa del Sol, it is the social heart of this part of Andalucía.

The San Roque golf course was designed by Dave Thomas and is the European HQ for the PGA European Tour (much like TPC Sawgrass in Florida). Set in the Andalucían hills, the course has two communicating nine hole loops, each with distinctive characteristics, enhancing the natural environment. The possibility of combining different holes and difficulty levels makes the course ideal for both experts and leisure players. The first nine holes set off into the cork oaks and return to the Clubhouse across a pond at the par four 6th, a long par three 7th, a demanding and endless par four 8th and a fine par five 9th. On the second nine there is a lot more water. The 11th, 12th, and 17th holes all have serious water hazards while the par four 18th has a pond, a stream and another pond, all of which must be negotiated before reaching the green.

San Roque Club is one of the region's full resort destinations offering first class accommodation, golf, beach, horse riding and fine dining at three restaurants including Japanese. San Roque Club's Suites Hotel played host to both teams at The 1997 Ryder Cup and to competitors at both editions of the AmEx World Golf Championships. Since then the Club has opened the Seve Ballesteros Golf Academy. The school is open every day of the year under the direction of Seve's brother Vincente. Seve has designed a number of programs for beginners through to advanced players which will ensure you retain the true love of the game whilst perfecting your pitch and putt. San Roque also plays host to the annual PGA European Tour Qualifying School. One of the club's outstanding features is its excellent equestrian centre now managed by Captain Mark Phillips. Additional facilities include a two-tiered covered driving range, practice areas and putting greens, one pitching area, three practice bunkers. In addition there is club, buggy and trolley rental, a Pro Shop, Club fitting and GPS (Global Positioning System) buggies. "San Roque gives you encouragement to hit the ball at the flag. It is a challenging course which is why players always feel they have played reasonably well here" Dave Thomas, Course architect
