Details
The latest jewel in the crown for visitors to Sotogrande is La Reserva Club de Golf, making this one of the most prestigious golfing areas on the Costa del Sol with Valderrama and Real Club de Golf Sotogrande nearby. This new private and exclusive golf club is situated in a unique area with magnificent views of the Mediterranean Sea and surrounding mountains.
This 18-hole golf course was designed by Cabell B. Robinson and only opened in 2004 but it already has maturity that exceeds expectations. The course is situated in two valleys, which join in the form of the letter "Y". When work commenced with the clearing of the of the existing scrub, all trees and plants with ecological or scenic interest were protected by transplanting them to a provisional nursery with the aim of taking them back to their original place.
As for the course itself, it is extremely impressive and has a quality that is difficult to match. The shaping and features are large scale but very easy on the eye and quietly fit in with the wonderful surroundings. The course is relatively long and measures just over 6,700 metres from the back tees and such an overall length was desirable in order for Sotogrande to have the option of hosting major international tournaments in the future. More importantly, for the ordinary golfer there are two forward men's and ladies tees that should enable all classes of golfers to enjoy their round. A computerised irrigation system ensures the course is always presented in perfect condition. The fairways are magnificent and amply wide. A good drive in the correct position will give you an easier approach to the green. Water hazards are a feature of the course and are found on six holes but only in one instance is there a frontal hazard. The course designer was more interested in protecting the pins and therefore has allowed more conservative approaches that take the hazard out of play. The greens are really the heart of the course being relatively large to provide bigger targets for the average player. However, to be on the green in regulation is one thing but to be on the right part is another. Beware the long putt on these greens!
