Details
The three courses at La Cala (Campo Asia, which was known as the South Course; Campo America, formerly the North Course; and the new Europa Course) have all been designed by American Architect Cabell B. Robinson and are complemented by an elegant colonial-style clubhouse and David Leadbetter Golf Academy that includes a six-hole par three "executive" course in addition to a large driving range. In the near future, an 18 hole course, also designed by Robinson, will be added to the facilities. Fairways of Bermuda grass, Pencross grass greens and bunkers of crushed marble, make The La Cala courses unforgettable. The second Costa del Sol-Cajamar Gran Prix Circit was held here in addition to the 2002 Solbank Golf tour. Every year La Cala hosts the Cudeca Club and the Aesgolf Tournament.
The North Course starts with the three flattest holes of the Resort followed by a narrow and interesting par three. The signature hole of La Cala Resort is hole 16 on this course. The tee provides a panoramic 360 degree view of the Resort, with the lake adjoining the entire right hand side of the green. On the 16th hole, though only a short par three, accuracy and touch are needed, especially if there is a wind blowing. Downhill all the way from here, there is nothing nicer than relaxing on the terrace of the 19th after a good round of golf.
The south course is equally spectacular. Although the fairways are wide and the greens large, the often sloping terrain can severely punish wayward shots. Thick rough awaits stray drives, and since the greens are elevated, approach shots also require accuracy. The 10th is considered La Cala's most difficult par five, while the short 11th hole calls for the tee shot to pass over a deep ravine. Two interesting holes with water hazards are the 5th and 12th and the 3rd is simply picturesque. La Cala will grow from 36 to 54-holes with the addition of the Club's third course currently under construction.
The La Cala Resort has its own hotel and also offers squash and tennis courts, an indoor swimming pool, and saunas. The Club boasts a large range of practice facilities including a par three executive course, a driving range, practice areas for chipping and putting and a fully equipped Pro Shop. It is recommendable to purchase a strokesaver before playing in order to know how to beat the courses and not to let them beat you.
