Golf

Baltray (Co. Louth) Golf Club

County Louth Golf Club, or Baltray as it's known locally, is one of those golf courses that contradict the commonly held belief that Ireland's eastern coast is far inferior to the southwestern region in terms of quality links courses.

At a length of almost 6,800 yards, Baltray is certainly not short, but when you consider the natural hazards of the links game combined with blowing winds and heavy rough, it becomes a difficult, though immensely enjoyable golf course. Some of the finest holes at Baltray include the difficult par four opening hole; the long par five 3rd, which requires a blind shot over a knoll onto a small green; the par five 6th, which leads through a valley of dunes to a green hidden behind two hills; the par four 14th, which requires a drive from an elevated tee to a fairway almost 200 yards away; and the majestic closing hole, complete with some malicious bunkering.

Royal County Down

royal_county_down_north_east.jpgRoyal County Down the very words are enough to send a shiver up your spine. Laid out beneath the imperious gaze of the Mountains of Mourne and enjoying a magnificent setting along the shores of Dundrum Bay, Royal County Down is truly one of the world's finest links golf courses.

Walking down the first fairway with the sound of breaking waves in your ears is a truly memorable occasion and it is said that you can always spot the first time visitor to Newcastle as they can be seen walking up the first fairway backwards, so enchanting is the beauty behind.

The Links At Portmarnock

links_at_portmarnock_east_coast.jpgPortmarnock Hotel & Golf Links is a superb links course, essentially fashioned from the same dune-land as Portmarnock and deserves its growing international reputation. Bernard Langer designed the golf course and he certainly did justice to his first links design project. Upon completing his work, Langer commented: “there are very few locations in Europe that could have allowed me the opportunity…to design such a classic championship links. I hope all who play it discover its magic and challenging beauty”. The inspirational use of natural dunes, elevated tees and greens, acutely angled doglegs and almost 100 bunkers, test even the most accomplished golfers.

The K Club / Palmer Course

k_club_palmer_course_east_coast.jpgDesigned by Arnold Palmer, the K Club hosted the Ryder Cup in 2006, the first time the event was staged in Ireland.
If ever a golf course reflected the personality of its designer, then surely the K Club is it. And while it may seem odd to describe a golf course as charismatic and cavalier, from the moment you arrive at the first tee here, a unique atmosphere envelops you. This is quite simply one of Europe’s most spectacular venues. It charms, entices and frustrates and though it is recognized as one of Ireland’s most testing inland layout, the course invariably brings out the best in your game.

Portmarnock Golf Club

portmarnock_club_east_coast.jpgis universally acknowledged as one of the world’s truly great links courses and having played it, you will understand why. Located on a small peninsula, which extends into the Irish Sea, Portmarnock is surrounded by water on three sides and laid out in serpentine fashion, with no two successive holes playing in the same direction. Unlike many courses in this respect, Portmarnock demands a continual discernment of wind direction.

The Island Golf Club

the_island_golf_club__east_package.jpgThe Island Golf Club, to put it quite simply, is one of the finest links golf courses in the world. Just why it is generally not spoken about in the same breath as Ballybunion, Royal County Down and Waterville is a mystery but make no mistake that The Island is in that league.

The course will tantalize, tempt, satisfy and infuriate but at the end of the round you will be well aware that you have just played a very special golf course. It is that good. Having played in the Irish PGA Championship at The Island in 1999, Darren Clark proclaimed the course "a fantastic links which tests every club in the bag". This is no understatement.

Accommodation

Slieve Donard, Co. Down

slieve_donard_co._down.jpgA hotel with a long and distinguished history, the Slieve Donard Resort and Spa celebrated its centenary as a hotel in 1997. Located at the foot of the scenic Mountains of Mourne, which have been immortalized in verse by Percy French, the Slieve Donard Hotel stands on 6 acres of private grounds directly beside the world-renowned Royal County Down golf links. The picture from the top of the 9th hole on Royal Co. Down, from where the hotel is literally no more than a good 8-iron from the first tee, looking past the spire of the Resort towards the mysterious Mourne Mountains is one of the most famous in golf.

Following a superb refurbishment and extension program towards the latter end of 2006, the Slieve Donard has now taken its place amongst the finest hotels of its kind in the country. Whilst you can still enjoy the unique Victorian features that this one hundred and ten year old property has to offer including the magnificent chandeliers and aged oak panelling, it now boasts one of the most luxurious Spa facilities in the country.

Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links, Dublin

portmarnock_hotel__golf_links_dublin.jpgSituated in splendid surroundings, overlooking the beautiful islands of Lambay and Ireland's Eye, Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links was originally the home of the Jameson family (of Irish Whiskey fame). The house has been tastefully transformed into a magnificent international hotel, while the surrounding land has been moulded into a superb links golf course at the hand of Bernard Langer. And having opened for business in 1996, Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links is already widely acknowledged as one of Ireland's leading golfing hotels.

Given its beautiful setting, it's hard to believe that The Links (as it's known) is only 11 miles from the bustling streets of Ireland's capital city but then that is one of the property's major benefits - peace and serenity, yet close to Dublin city. Each of the 103 bedrooms has been cleverly designed to ensure that they overlook either the sea or the golf course and while the suites certainly offer a different degree of luxury, all the rooms offer exceptionally comfortable accommodation, with superb facilities.

The award-winning the Osborne Restaurant serves an excellence range of international cuisine, while dining at the Links Brasserie offers a less formal setting and is ideal for an after golf meal.
