| Kinnitty Castle |
Kinnitty, Co.Offaly, Ireland
Description:
Located in the centre of Ireland, Kinnitty Castle has had a long and turbulent history. The original castle was destroyed in 1209 and rebuilt by the Normans in 1213, who were subsequently driven out by the powerful O'Carroll clan. A new castle, which was built in 1630, was confiscated by English forces in 1641 and following its sale in 1764; the castle was again destroyed in 1922, this time by Republican forces. Rebuilt in 1928, the castle has recently been transformed into a luxury hotel.
Today, Kinnitty Castle represents a unique blend of old world elegance and modern comforts. From an accommodation perspective, guests may choose between the castle itself and Moneyguyneen Country House, which was originally the dower house to Kinnitty Castle. Each of the bedrooms in the castle retain their original dimensions in keeping with the period of the castle, while the drawing room and library bar have been lovingly restored to their original splendour. The Dungeon Bar remains as a vivid reminder of the past, while the Slí Dala Restaurant serves mouth-watering cuisine in a superb period setting.
Should you prefer to opt for the more private, country house style accommodation offered by Moneyguyneen Country House, you certainly won't be disappointed. Offering 12 beautifully refurbished en-suite bedrooms, drawing room and dining room; this is a haven for the most discerning guest who appreciates both the beauty of the enchanting demesne as well as the finest in Irish hospitality.
