WORLD INVITATIONAL FATHER & SON TOURNAMENT 2008
The 19th Annual World Invitational Father & Son Golf Tournament has been won by Gerry and Cormac McManus from Limerick Golf Club meaning that they retain the title as Father and Son winners following their success in 2007.
The 2008 field consisted of 92 Father & Son teams from a range of countries including USA, Ireland, Canada, India, Scotland, England and Argentina. Following three days of tournament play the winners emerged with a winning total of 121 for a four shot victory from the better ball stableford competition. The runners-up were Steve & Mike Evanoff from USA who scored 117 points.
Following the first two days of the event, there was a 36 hole cut at 68 points which this year saw a record 37 teams continuing in the competition, the remainder competed in the runner-up Plate Competition which was won by Anthony & Alex Thornley from the USA with a last day total of 36 points.
Each year the event has proved a spectacular success and is thoroughly enjoyed by all participating. It provides a fantastic opportunity for Father and Son to spend time and to compete together, meet friends, both old and new. The event is open to contestants of all ages.
Dermot Desmond is the only father to have won the tournament with each of his three sons (Brett, Ross & Dery). There have only ever been two winners from the USA, Vic & Rudy Pino in 2002 and of Aidan & Sam Browne in 2005. This is despite having a large US contingent each year, comprising approximately 50% of the field.
The
Venue
The tournament venue, Waterville
Golf Links, is regarded as one of the World's great courses measuring over 7,000 yards off the blue tees. The course is rated in the top five courses in Ireland and in the top 20 links courses of the world. One of the best-maintained courses in the country, Waterville boasts fast greens and manicured fairways. The famous 17th (par 3 hole), Mulcahy's Peak is named after John A. Mulcahy, Waterville's creator and has spectacular views of the course and the beautiful surrounding Kerry countryside. But time does not stand still in Waterville - in 2003 and again in 2004, Tom Fazio seamlessly added bite and intrigue while enhancing the unique links characteristics of the course and it now joins Pine Valley and Winged Foot as one of Fazio's renovation masterpieces.
The clubhouse is all-inclusive, with locker
rooms, Pro-Shop, and adjacent Golf School. The course has been home
to the World Invitational Father & Son Golf Tournament since
its inception and has also hosted the Kerry Gold Classic in the
past.
The village of Waterville is located on the
famous Ring of Kerry and has an abundance of fine accommodation,
world class fish restaurants, fishing, horseriding, cycling and
beautiful Kerry beaches. Waterville is one hour's drive from Farranfore
Airport, three hours drive from Shannon Airport and just over two
hours from Cork Airport. Transfers can be provided on request.
Accommodation is at the Waterville Lake Hotel,
The Butler Arms and Waterville House. There is limited availability
in some categories and requests are dealt with on a best efforts
basis. The Waterville Lake Hotel is very scenically located with
many of the rooms having a spectacular view of the lake. The
Butler Arms is 1 mile from the golf course and is in the centre
of the village.
Waterville House is an 18th century manor house. The property features
a lot of natural beauty on the Atlantic, and the most famous
sea
trout and salmon fishery in Ireland.
The Father and Son Package includes lunches,
barbeque, gala dinner, prizes & photographs. |
